African cinema

How many African film classics do you know? And how many famous African film directors, actors and actresses? Exactly! Not that many. It is about time to change that, because African film is special and deserves more attention.
In this Special on African film there are five articles. Curator Erna Beumers emphasises the importance of African cinema in an introductory interview. She also gives her personal top 15 of African films. The other four articles each present a special element or an event of African film for each region. In East Africa this is the Zanzibar International Film Festival, reported live from Zanzibar by Peter Vlam. In West Africa, in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, film director Gaston Gaboré has opened his educational institute Imagine. Inge Ruigrok interviewed the Angolan film director Zeze Gamboa, who describes the film climate in Angola after the civil war. And finally, Bart Luirink gives an impression of the South African queer film scene, a genre unique in Africa.
