Here are the Top Twenty Web Celebs: the people who didn’t necessarily set out to be well-known, but ended up famous anyway due to the viral power of the Web.

1. Leslie Hall

I love Leslie Hall; not only because she is the Keeper of the Gems, but also because she simply rocks my socks off with her gold pantsuit, her many, MANY sweaters, and her rockin’ beats.

2. Peter Pan

Yes, there really is a “real” Peter Pan, and his name is Randy Constan. His site consists basically of Peter Pan-nish writings and lots of pictures of him in his homemade pixie outfits.

3. Chad Vader

You’ve heard of Darth Vader, right? Well, Chad Vader is the younger, less popular brother of Darth who works as an assistant manager at a grocery store.

4. LonelyGirl15

LonelyGirl15 is the Web persona of a teenage girl who decided to put her life online through a series of videos that detailed her boyfriend issues, her parents as part of a cult, etc. The videos (and LonelyGirl15 herself) were later found out to be part of an elaborate hoax.

5. LisaNova

LisaNova is a hilariously funny comedian who has a series of short video parodies; all very low budget, all very funny. She gained so much popularity over this past year that she became a castmember on the popular Fox show “MadTV”.

6. Chris Crocker

Chris Crocker was famous this year primarily for his video pleading for people to leave troubled pop siren Britney Spears alone (see it here: Leave Britney Alone). The jury is still out if he was serious or just joking around; either way, he’s horribly mesmerizing.

7. Tila Tequila

The lovely Tila Tequila started out as a popular MySpace artist and moved on eventually to her own reality show (“A Shot At Love”). Best known for her modeling gigs in Penthouse, Maxim, and Stuff; as well as her singing and songwriting skills.

8. Fake Steve Jobs

Fake Steve Jobs is a blog written by someone claiming to be Apple CEO Steve Jobs; obviously, it’s not Steve, but it’s definitely someone who knows their Mac stuff. Always good for a laugh, and sometimes even thought-provoking (not often, but it happens).

Remember the movie “Tron”, about humans who get sucked into an alternate universe video game/computer world? Well, the Tron Guy LOVES that movie and made an extremely realistic costume and Web site to celebrate it.

10. Chuck Norris

You might already know about Chuck Norris from his many marital arts films and popular television shows, but what you probably don’t know is that behind Chuck Norris’s beard, there is only another fist. Yes, it’s true – and you can find more of these pithy sayings at the official Chuck Norris Facts site.

11. Problogger Darren Rowse

Darren Rowse is the man behind and a number of other blogs, including and LivingRoom; as well as the blogging network. Mr. Rowse is perhaps best known for his tips that he gives to aspiring and expert bloggers alike at ProBlogger – I myself have learned a lot about promoting my own blogs from Darren – in addition to the fact that he is a “pro blogger”; he is able to earn a full-time (pretty decent!) living working from home with his blogs.

Perez Hilton is a wickedly funny and irreverent gossip blog written by Perez Hilton, the alter ego of Mario Lavendeira. His site aims to cover the latest gossip news, and is updated frequently throughout the day. Perez is known best for his outrageously campy comments and knowing the celebs he writes about personally.

Dooce is a blog written by Heather Armstrong, where she chronicles her life as a parent and a wife. Sound boring? Not in the slightest. Dooce either makes me laugh so hard I’m spraying stuff at the monitor, or nod in understanding as I read something that resonates with my own life.

14. Jonathan Coulton

Jonathan Coulton is a singer/songwriter who gained notoriety primarily by people passing around his song parodies on the Web. My favorite? “Re:Your Brains.”

16. Robert Scoble of Scobleizer

One of the best sites on the Web to read an experienced layman’s view of technology is Scobleizer, a blog written by former Microsoft employee Robert Scoble. He does a great job of making complicated technology concepts and happenings easy to understand and relevant.

17. Tay Zonday

Internet singing star Tay Zonday wrote and performed his song “Chocolate Rain” about the dangers of racism in 2007…and the viral video scene has never been quite the same. Zonday is known primarily for his deep voice and unique song compositions.
