‘Woodstock 40 Years On: Back To Yasgur’s Farm’

One of several Woodstock commemorative releases and reissues marking the festival’s 40th anniversary is an ambitious compilation from Rhino Entertainment. Woodstock 40 Years On: Back to Yasgur’s Farm is loaded with 77 songs, half of which are being released for the first time. The other half have been remastered from original Woodstock movie soundtrack.

Retained from the original soundtrack is the ambience: announcements from the stage, the sound of the rain that interrupted and delayed the festival for hours at a time, and natural sound of the crowd between performances.

Among the “extras” in the six-CD box are photographs of the festival from the noted rock photographer, Henry Diltz.

Rhino is offering a small sampler of eight of the tracks, including performances by Jefferson Airplane, Crosby Stills & Nash, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe & The Fish, Joan Baez and Arlo Guthrie. If you’ve never heard Airplane’s Woodstock performance of “Somebody To Love” or CCR’s “I Put A Spell On You” or Country Joe & The Fish’s “Rock And Soul Music” this listening party is well worth attending:
