10 Hot New Rap Releases – September 2009

September is undoubtedly the best month for new hip-hop releases thus far. The arrival of buzzworthy albums like Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2 and Blueprint III should make your trip to the record store much more exciting this month. Here are September’s Top 10 New Rap CDs.

10. Skyzoo – ‘The Salvation’

Skyzoo - Salvation
Theme is the name of the game on Skyzoo’s The Salvation LP. The Brooklyn MC says he always wanted to drop an album since he was 9 and uses Salvation as a canvass to paint a portrait of his life. Skyzoo’s latest is light on guest features, but the production cast features heavy-hitters like Just Blaze, 9th Wonder, Black Milk, Needlz, Illmind, and Nottz.

Beanie Sigel - Broad Street Bully
Contrary to many reports, The Broad Street Bully is not an official Beanie Sigel album. According to a report by XXLmag.com, some songs on the LP have already appeared on Sig’s MySpace page. If this early review of Man On The Moon is anything to go by, Cudi’s debut sounds like one hell of an adventurous album. Collaborators include RATATAT, MGMT, and Chip the Ripper. See what I mean?

Ant, who oversaw production on Ali’s Undisputed Truth LP, returns to man the boards on Us. The album offers a profound personal glimpse into a vulnerability seldom seen or heard in music, while simultaneously touching on the strengths and flaws of the human condition. “I wanted to take it to a more mature level,” Ghostface says of his new direction. “It’s like having the same piece of p-ssy for 20 years. Sometimes you just need to change it up.” Will Wizard of Poetry be the album that finally taints Ghost’s nearly impeccable discography?

2. Raekwon – ‘Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2’

Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2
Through all the rumors and pushbacks, the one aspect of Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II that I was most concerned about was the production. With RZA contributing a measly 2 tracks to the album, Rae turned to the elite sound architects such as Marley Marl, Pete Rock, and J Dilla for additional beats. Expect some viscous beats and witty, intelligent narratives.

1. Jay-Z – ‘Blueprint III’

Jay-Z is arguably the biggest hip-hop star of our time, so it’s no surprise that Blueprint 3 sits comfortably atop this month’s Top New Rap Releases. Blueprint III will be released on 9/11 to coincide with the anniversary of the tragic terrorist events of 2001. It also marks the 8th anniversary of the original Blueprint.
