2010 Action Movie Preview(4)

2010 won’t have Spider-Man or Batman (we do get Christopher Nolan’s Inception) movies, but Iron Man returns, Robin Hood’s back to steal from the rich, and the long, long, long-awaited sequel to Tron finally arrives. 2010 also finds a new batch of superhero types heading to theaters in Jonah Hex and Kick-Ass. Plus, Tom Cruise, Angelina Jolie, Sam Worthington, and John Travolta have action films ready to launch in ’10.Check out this list of action movies hitting theaters throughout 2010, listed in order of release, to see if there’s something that might persuade you to take action and buy a ticket. 

31. ‘Red Dawn’

Starring: Josh Hutcherson, Chris Hemsworth and Josh Peck 

What’s It About? “Wolverines!” The original 1984 Red Dawn starred the late Patrick Swayze and a batch of talented young actors as survivors trying to defend themselves against an invasion by Russian and Chinese forces. This new Red Dawn follows along the same storyline, with armed invaders parachuting in, taking over their town, killing anyone who tries to fight back, and taking all the rest of the town’s citizens prisoner. A group of friends manages to escape and uses all their wits and skills to fight back.

32. ‘Tron Legacy’

Starring: Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde 

What’s It About? Back in 1984 TRON broke ground with its special effects. Now, 25+ years later, a new Tron film hits theaters and you can be sure this Tron will blow its predecessor out of the water visually. But, will it have a lasting impact on its audience the way the original film did? Probably not, but it’ll be interesting to see how closely this new movie stays to the tone and spirit of that first film.

Jeff Bridges returns as Kevin Flynn, still trapped in the world he was pulled into 25 years ago. Garrett Hedlund plays his son, a tech-savvy guy who figures out how to get to his long-lost dad.

33. ‘Scott Pilgrim vs the World’

Starring: Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Chris Evans 

What’s It About?: How far would you go to win over the girl/guy of your dreams? Would you fight off all of their exes to prove you are meant to be together? Scott Pilgrim (Cera) falls for Ramona (Winstead), but there’s a catch. Her seven evil ex-boyfriends control her love life and he must do battle with each of them in order to get close to the pretty Ramona.

34. ‘The Eagle of the Ninth’

The Eagle of the Ninth
Starring: Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell and Mark Strong 

What’s It About? Rosemary Sutcliff’s novel comes to life on the big screen in The Eagle of the Ninth, an action adventure tale set in Rome in 140 AD. Channing Tatum, of Step Up and GI Joe fame (and A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints for those not into goofy teen movies) plays a centurion out to clear his dad’s bad name. Jamie Bell, so good in Defiance, co-stars as Tatum’s British slave.
